Edgar Allen Poe: The Raven Creating the Melancholic Tone in ââ¬Å"The Ravenâ⬠Edgar Allan Poeââ¬â¢s The Raven, representing Poeââ¬â¢s own introverted crisis of hell, is unusually moving and attractive to the reader. In his essay entitled The Philosophy of Composition, Poe reveals his purpose in writing ââ¬Å"The Ravenâ⬠and also describes the work of composing the poem as being carefully calculated in all aspects. Of all melancholy topics, Poe wished to use the one that was universally understood, death; specifically death involving a beautiful woman. The apparent tone in Edgar Allan Poeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Ravenâ⬠seemingly represents a very painful condition of mind, an intellect sensitive to madness and the abyss of melancholy brought upon by the death of aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the first stanza, questioning from what direction the ââ¬Å"tappingâ⬠came, he throws open the door, the narratorsââ¬â¢ nemesis not to be found. The raven directs all further action in the poem, it ridicules and patronizes the narrator throughout the composition and its evil force permeates the air and induces suffering and anguish within the character. Emotions culminate with the attainment of a climax as the narrator faces his confused and disordered world. The narrator, in his madness, shrieks, ââ¬Å"Get thee back into the tempest and the Nightââ¬â¢s Plutonian shore!â⬠(98). Poeââ¬â¢s calculated use of symbolism was influential in establishing the literary reputation of ââ¬Å"The Ravenâ⬠. The raven is established as a symbol for the narrators mournful and ceaseless remembrance of his lost love. There has been considerable rise in the revenues of the Formula One events in the last 15 years and it has also surpassed its close rival FIFA World Cup (Kim et al. 2017). There are an increasing number of stakeholders that are increasingly aiming for acquiring more number of motor race venues, which would speed up the liberty process (Holmes et al. 2015). There has been increasing global trends of watching Formula One, which would also increase the revenues of the event (Holmes et al. 2015). There are opportunities for enhancing the competitive spirit of the races and hence there is scope of adding ancillary elements. There is scope of exploiting the digital media by the Grand Prix organizers (Holmes et al. 2015). It is important to grow the digital revenues of the firm by generating direct revenues from the customers. The threats of the Grand Prix event include the different teams who might be breaking out from the league and forming their individual teams. This may reduce the potential glory of the Australian Grand Prix (Holmes et al. 2015). The top drivers of this form of racing might move out and enter other forms of racing. There is a growing popularity of the event Moto GP, which may pose sever threat to the Australian Grand Prix and take away their dedicated customers (Pinch and Reimer 2017). Recommendations The Australian Grand Prix event needs to be improved for better future growth prospects of the event. The disputes between the FOTA and FIA should be improved. It is true that there is high expenditure that may force many teams to withdraw themselves. There should be some additional options for the teams participating in the Formula One. There should be proper segregation of the events. There is greater need of the improving the quality of cars in the Grand Prix event, which would improve the competitive spirit of the event. It is also important to implement cars with wider tires so that the drivers get more grips while the race is going on. It is important to increase the promotional activities of the event as this would help the event to penetrate more into the masses. Tar Baby Essay Example For Students
Tar Baby Essay Toni Morrisons Tar Baby is a novel about conflicts and learned biases that exist on a race, class and gender level. Many of the characters experience a sense of exile either from their environment or from themselves. All of these characters have some sort of issue that exists on a race, class or gender level, that will eventually lead them to their exile. Most of the novel takes place on a white millionaires Caribbean estate, Valerian Street. He in a sense exiled himself from the states because he felt alienated from the world that he lived in. He lived in a capitalistic society, and when he finished working his usefulness in that society was over. So he left his home in Philadelphia with his wife who was not happy about having two homes: I live in airplanes now. Nowhere. Not in PhiladelphiaNot here(P.28) His wife Margaret does not understand why he wants to be on an Island without people that they know. We will write a custom essay on Tar Baby specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Margaret married Valerian when she was a child; one reason for this was that she wanted to get away from her family. In a way, she exiled herself from her childhood because of its complications. Her parents were bothered with the fact that she had red hair, because her father didnt have red hair. He wasnt sure if she was his child or not and this tension continued throughout her childhood. She escaped her past through Valerian and began a new life without the tension that she felt from her parents. Because of her red hair she stands out in her family, and eventually becomes abusive to her husband and her own Son, Michael. Michael is a silent character in the novel but still plays a role. He never shows up at the house because he to exiled himself from his family. One reason for his exile was that his mother abused him when he was a child and he seems to have different beliefs than his father has. He didnt want to follow in his footstep and take over the family candy company: .the son was not charmed with Teddy Boys and Island retreats(P.53) Michael was their only biological child, but Jadine was raised by Valerian and Margaret and her Uncle and Aunt who are the Streets servants. Jadine unlike Michael exiles herself from the life she had away from the Street family. She lived in Paris with all of its glamour, glitz and fame; she worked as a model. She runs away from her way of life in Paris, the life of passing or conforming to what the powerful people in her profession want of and from her. She comes to the Island to relax and clear her head, Margaret believes that she is getting over and affair(P.29) Jadine moves to the Island to find herself getting involved with a young man by the name of Son. Sons exile is the most clear because he was running away from the law. He killed his wife, so the law and his wifes family were after him. The novel itself starts off with Son jumping off of a ship attempting to get back to the town where he was from, Eloe so that he could end his exile. He gets caught in a current and is unable to reach Eloe. (P.6) He ends up on the Island still running from his past using different names for secrecy. In a conversation with Jadine, he tells her his different names: . that says William Green One of them any way. I got another that says Herbert Robinson. And one says Louis Stover (P.174)One of the major themes in this novel was about the different characters that in some way exiled from themselves or from their environment. In each case, the exile had to do with race, class and gender. Valerian left his environment because he felt worthless; he had no more to contribute in the economic world therefor felt out of place. Margarets exile was different be cause she was able to do it because of her gender. She used her good looks to attract Valerian and he took her away from her family, and her past. Jadine was escaping her race issues in Paris;

Tedtalk by Christen Reighter I Dont Want Children Stop Telling Me Ill Change My Mind! Professor Ramos Blog
Tedtalk by Christen Reighter I Dont Want Children Stop Telling Me Ill Change My Mind! This Tedtalk by Christen Reighter is about women not having children and how bizarre it seems to a lot of people. She understood at a young age that her role in life was to have a baby, and to get married. But she knew she didnââ¬â¢t want that. When she would respond to her relativeââ¬â¢s comments on her not wanting to bare children, they would question her and say that she is selfish for abstaining from motherhood. No one explained to her all of the risk factors of having a child. The risk of passing on hereditary illness, danger of having to stop life-saving medication during pregnancy, over population, and access to recourses. If that wasnââ¬â¢t enough there is 415,000 children already in foster care for probably one of those reasons listed. Many of these reasons helped her decide to be surgically sterilized. Christen began to do research on getting her tubes tide. She learned that she wasnââ¬â¢t alone. 1 in 5 women will not have a biological child by choice or by chance. Kristen stated that woman had reported ââ¬Å"medical practitioners as condescending and dismissive of their motivationsâ⬠. Many woman appeal to OB/GYNââ¬â¢s but were most often turned down for the procedure with disrespect. Doctors mainly said that they were too young, didnââ¬â¢t have enough children, or that they should get married before making this decision. On Christenââ¬â¢s first dr. appointment she had dressed up in a professional manner and she had told the Doctor all of her credentials and all of her research so he could take her serious, but that was not the case. Instead, biased questions were thrown at her, it almost felt like she was being interrogated for a serious crime. The doctor wanted her to think about all of the future possibilities, basically trying to talk her out of it and trying to belittle her. ââ¬Å"But what if you want a child 20 years from now?â⬠Christen replied with, ââ¬Å"Truth is, I only removed a single path to parenthood. I never needed biology to form a family anyway.â⬠She had went to the doctors for more information and support instead was insulted. She would soon have to be seen by 5 doctors before she got the approval for her surgery. Christen stayed persistent with her decision as she signed her consent papers. The doctor nodded his head as she signed the papers, saying, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ll change your mindâ⬠. Christen didnââ¬â¢t realize how strongly society clings to this ââ¬Å"woman will be mothersâ⬠roll. She was appalled by society not being able to distinguish her from being a woman and not a mother. A statement that stood out to me is when she said ââ¬Å"Being a mother is the extension of womanhood not the definition. Woman have this amazing ability to create life. But when we say that that is her purpose, that says that her entire existence is a means to an end.â⬠ââ¬Å"I wanted woman to know that there absolutely is a choice behind maternity, and it is yours, and yours alone.â⬠Questions: 1. Constitution and Criminal law Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Constitution and Criminal law - Term Paper Example ffer between societies the general consensus is such: ââ¬Å"An act or the commission of an act that is forbidden or the omission of a duty that is commanded by a public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that lawâ⬠(Merriam-Webster 2011). Based on this definition, the US Constitution has set up rights and punishments for those who commit crimes against the person including murder and other violent crimes. Although some will argue the treatment of criminals is morally unjust, those whose commit crimes against the person maintain their constitutional rights before and after arrest. The word crime derives from the Latin word crà «men which meant ââ¬Å"chargeâ⬠or "cry of distressâ⬠which came from the Ancient Greek word krima (à ºÃ à ¯Ã ¼Ã ±), which described an intellectual mistake or an offense against the community (Harper 2010). Today, the definition of crime differs between societies. In fact, several sociologist and criminologist believe that crime is a social creation in itself. Entry into the penal system usually revolves around the process of neutralization and broken or unformed social bonds. Hirschi theory of social bond help explains why individuals turn toward antisocial behaviors. According to Hirschi an effective social bond shields a person from the temptation of criminal behavior. A successful bond includes attachment, or feeling cared for; commitment, or investing in oneââ¬â¢s reputation; conviction or believing in shared moral standards; and involvement or engagement in an enjoyable activity (Hirschi 1969). Criminal behav ior is further encouraged by neutralization. Techniques included blaming the victim, considering him/her as less than human, and, therefore, deserving of the violence; denying that harm was

Importance of islamic spain and its legacy Essay
Importance of islamic spain and its legacy - Essay Example Islam is said to have been practiced in Spain as early as the year 709. At this time, Spain was still non-existent and the area was the Iberian Peninsula. It was not until 711 that Islam stamped its authority in the area. This was as a result of the need to stamp out the despotic rule of King Roderick who violated the peoplesââ¬â¢ rights with reckless abandon. Tariq Ibn Ziyad successfully led the Muslim armies and concurred the area. In a time span of seven years, the Muslims had gained total control of the area and they ruled some parts of this the area for seven hundred years. After these years, Islam began to weaken. By the year 950, Muslims formed one of the strongest and most stable societies under the rule of the able Umayyad Caliphate in the area of Al-Andalus. Out of a population of over eight million at the time, only one million was not Muslim. As a result of the stability, Cordoba as the capital of this region was sought after by Muslims and other Europeans in search of education. The downfall of Muslim rule began when the ruling caliphate disintegrated in the year 1000 to form several but weakened states that were known as Taifa. The disunity in these small states made them susceptible to attacks by Kingdoms of Christian background. The Taifas fell apart under the attack of the Christian Kingdoms until only one, the Granada was left by 1240. Granada was able to resist attacks as it was protected by mountains that made it difficult to conquer by the Christian factions. However, the disunity in the Muslim faction finally led to the concur of Granada as the Christian faction worked together tirelessly until they took over Granada in 1491 by forcing Sultan Muhammad the Muslim Leader append his signature on the treaty that required him to cede control to the Christian kingdom then.(lostislamhistory.com). After the conquest, the Christians made Islam illegal in Granada in 1502 and became very harsh to Muslims. The intolerance led to a mass exodus of Mu slims to the Northern parts of Africa. Those who remained could not express their faith in Islam. The exodus continued till in the 1600 when almost all Muslims had left Granada as a direct consequence of the religious bigotry. Those who remained behind were forced to join the Catholic Church but it was just for safety. They still secretly practiced Islam.It was not until 1960 when Islam began to re-establish itself in Spain. Most of the Muslims in Spain from that time to 1970 were immigrants from Morocco who desired to get into France and other countries further north. They were discouraged by the strict immigration rules of these countries and decided to settle down in Spain. Islam sprouted once again. Other migrants of Muslim orientation who settled in Spain included those from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. These groups came to Spain either as businesspersons or learners. The number was slightly boosted by refugees from Iran in 1979. The influx of immigrant Muslims into Spain t ogether with the previous History of Islam is believed to have encourage many Spaniards to convert to Islam. They easily identified with it from the ancient times. (Mathew, 2009). Islam began to take route again in Spain leading to its legal recognition by the Government in 1992. By 1992, the percentage of Spanish Muslim converts was nearly equal to the number of immigrant Muslims in Spain. Apart from the rich historical legacy of Islam in Spain, Islam also significantly influenced the culture of the Spanish people. Current

Introduction * Insurance sector in India In India, insurance has a deep-rooted history. Insurance in various forms has been mentioned in the writings of Manu (Manusmrithi), Yagnavalkya (Dharmashastra) and Kautilya (Arthashastra). The fundamental basis of the historical reference to insurance in these ancient Indian texts is the same i.e. pooling of resources that could be re-distributed in times of calamities such as fire, floods, epidemics and famine. The early references to Insurance in these texts have reference to marine trade loans and carriers contracts. The insurance sector in India has grown at a fast rate post-liberalization in 1999. In the last decade, total premium grew at a CAGR of 25% and reached a total of $67 billion in 2010. Indian Life insurance industry (which contributes 88% of total Life and General insurance premium in India) has emerged as the 9th largest life insurance market in the world. Yet, Insurance penetration (measured as ratio of premium underwritten to GDP) was only at 5.2 % in 2010 ââ¬â significantly lower than Asian peers like South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong which boast an insurance density greater than 10%. With low insurance penetration levels, growth potential remains promising. More importantly, the pace and nature of growth will likely see a change where new behaviors and dynamics of demand and supply will apply. On the demand side, growth is being fuelled by the growing population base, rising purchasing power, increased insurance awareness, increased domestic savings and rising financial literacy. The suppliers are correspondingly playing a market making role as competition heightens and differentiation become necessary for profitable growth. The major insurance companies in India and their market share is as followsââ¬â Initially there were only two insurance companies that operated the insurance sector in India, namely, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the other General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC). On December 2000, the subsidiaries were declared independent and began to operate as independent as independent insurance companies. According to statistics the life insurance premiums and general insurance premiums accounts to 2.5% and 0.65% of Indiaââ¬â¢s GDP respectively * Role of HR in Insurance Industry The Human Resources function in the insurance industry is of utmost important. The business of acquiring clients, providing proper awareness and converting them into customers thoroughly depends on the sales force. India being a developing nation, majority of households do not have disposable income. There is a shift in customer loyalty in no time owing to the digital revolution. The population that has enough disposable income at hand also requires proper financial advice.
